Grower profile: Ralph and Judy Wilson

Orchard name: Wilgro Orchards

Brief family/orchard history...
Both Judy and Ralph are 1st generation orchardists. Judy grew up in Sydney and Wagga Wagga and Ralph also grew up in Wagga Wagga. They met in high school, and Judy went on to college whilst Ralph went on to agricultural college. The couple bought Springvale orchard and renamed it Wilgro (Wilson grown, will grow) in the 80’s.

How long has your family/you been growing Batlow Apples?
We have been growing apples for 21 years and before that Ralph was involved with Mountain Maid Co-operative as an advisor to growers.

Is there a history to the orchard?
Wilgro Orchards as it is now called has been around for many years and was one of the first areas in Batlow to grow fruit and vegetables.

What varieties do you grow and what is your favourite?
The two main varieties are Royal Gala and Pink Lady. We also grow Fuji, Braeburn and a new variety called Honeycrisp. We like all apples especially fresh from the tree.

Life in Batlow for a grower...
Some would say the quiet life but there’s plenty to do especially on the orchard. Batlow is a great place to live, great community, weather and spectacular scenery.

Why are you proud to be part of Batlow Fruit Cooperative?
The Co-operative is all about co-operation and that commitment to co-operation in a small community like Batlow is something to be proud of. Also we are proud of the founding orchardists of Batlow for their collective wisdom in setting up our Co-operative.
